About the Burn Specialty Team
The Burn Specialty Team serves as a regional resource that supports healthcare partners during large-scale burn incidents that exceed local burn center capabilities. Working in coordination with local and state agencies and regional American Burn Association (ABA) burn coordinators, the team helps augment personnel, expertise, and resource needs while strengthening overall response capacity.
Through education, training, exercises, and telehealth access to burn subject matter experts, the team works to enhance burn preparedness across the region. A key focus is identifying current burn care resources, recognizing gaps in capability, and collaborating with partners to address those needs. The team is committed to improving preparedness and response among both burn and non-burn healthcare providers by expanding access to training, education, and practical preparedness resources throughout the region.

Facilitated a Midwest Region Burn Capability Survey to regional partners, evaluated current capabilities for responding to a burn mass casualty incident, in conjunction insights to strengthen future exercises, improving regional readiness, enhancing coordination, and saving lives.
Represented R7 on the national Prehospital Blood Transfusion Coalition that is working to increase access to blood products in the prehospital settings for victims of trauma.
Instructed Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness (DMEP) and Fundamentals of Critical Care Support – Crisis Management (FCCS-CM) courses to 61 clinicians from Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri. In conjunction created 2 new instructors

Continue support of the Iowa Healthcare Coalition (HCC)/PHD burn annex/exercise development and participation in planning calls with their team.

Disaster Medical Team cross-sites working group continues work addressing, strategizing, and exploring ways to overcome the legal barriers of deployment.

Ongoing discussions with Nebraska verified burn center regarding burn surge facility implementation. The vision would be that one facility in each HCC region across the state would receive focused burn training at least twice yearly.
